Public lecture “The Modernist Struggle and Demise of the Avant-garde in Early 20th Century Japan: Hagiwara Kyojiro, Oguma Hideo, Kaneko Mitsuharu and Ogata Kamenosuke”

Dr Toshiko Ellis is Professor in Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at University of Tokyo, she will give a guest lecture on Japanese modernist poetry in University of Tartu literary circle Ellips.

Professor Ellis describes her topic thus: "The lecture will introduce Japanese modernist and avant-garde movements in the first half of the 20th century with a particular focus on poetry. After some discusssion on the question of modernism and modernity in the Japanese context, I will shed light on those poets whose works are characterized by expressions of bewilderment, discomfort and pain as they witnessed the extreme developments of a rapidly modernizing nation. At times writing against violence and suppresion, their activities were often short-lived. I would like to use this opportunity to read with my Estonian colleagues and students some works of these less-known poets whose endeavours have attracted little attention in mainstream literary history."

Time: 26.09, 18.00-19.30
Place: Ülikooli 16-102

The lecture is open to all.

The travel of the professor is supported by the European Regional Development Fund (University of Tartu ASTRA Project PER ASPERA).
