Movie screening - Rabha

"Rabha" film screening at Maailmafilmi Hall, Estonian National Museum, on the 5th of December at 18.00

The Rabhas are a tribe belonging to the Bodo family which includes the Kacharis, the Garos, the Lalungs, the Dimasas, the Hill Tippera, the Hajongs, the Mech communities, etc. The Rabha can be found scattered parts of Assam. In the month of January the Totola Rabhas of number 2, Kataligaon (Rabha Supa) in Mushalpur, the district headquarter of Baksa (Assam, India), gear up to pay their homage to Bura Bun Gohai, the old forest deity. The one surviving remnant of the indigenous religious practice of Totola Rabhas of Mushalpur is the worship and propitiation of Bura Bun Gohai which translates into ‘Old Forest Deity’. She is believed to be the god of all things and the prosperity of the village depends entirely on her. This documentary traces the journey of the Old Forest Deity from house to house in the village of Kataligaon. This is a humble initiative on the part of the researcher to throw light on the traditional religious practice of the Totola Rabhas

After the film there will be a discussion and Q&A with PhD student who is also the maker of the documentary, Bhupen Rabha.

The movie screening is a part of the lecture series on indigenous peoples of Northeast India.
