On Thursday, 21 November 2024, Professor Joseph Chinyong Liow from the National University of Singapore will visit the University of Tartu to give a public lecture and participate in a roundtable discussion. The public lecture and the discussion are open to all. The event is organised in cooperation with the International Centre for Defence and Security, the University of Tartu Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies, and the Asia Centre.
An open lecture and discussion by Prof. Joseph Chinyong Liow from the National University of Singapore will be held at the University of Tartu on Thursday, 21 November in the academic building at Lossi 36.
The public lecture “Southeast Asia’s Great Power Dilemma” will be held from 12:15 to 13:45 in room 214. The continued downturn in the US-China bilateral relationship poses significant problems for Southeast Asia. Professor Joseph Chinyong Liow will discuss the challenges regional countries face as they strive to navigate the US-China strategic competition while preserving the stability and growth they have experienced over the past two decades.
The discussion on US policy towards Asia and the EU in a changing context will take place in room 305 from 15:15 to 16:30. Prof. Joseph Chinyong Liow and Ass. Prof. Stefano Braghiroli (University of Tartu, Johan Skytte Institute for Policy Studies) will take part in the discussion, moderated by Louis Wierenga (University of Tartu Asia Centre, Baltic Defence College), which will focus on the US presidential election and the foreign policy of new President Donald Trump from an Asian and European perspective. The discussion will cover the expectations and changes to come.
In addition to working at the National University of Singapore, Prof. Joseph Chinyong Liow is the Dean of the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. His research interests encompass Muslim politics and social movements in Southeast Asia and the geopolitics and geoeconomics of the Asia-Pacific region. Prof. Chinyong Liow is the author, co-author, or editor of 18 books, the most recent being Navigating Uncertainty: Our Region in an Age of Flux (World Scientific, 2024), Islam and Political Power in Indonesia and Malaysia (Cambridge University Press Element Series 2022) and Dictionary of the Modern Politics of Southeast Asia, fifth edition (Routledge, 2022). A regular columnist for the Straits Times, his commentaries on international affairs have also appeared in the New York Times, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, National Interest, Nikkei Asian Review, Wall Street Journal, and South China Morning Post.
