Scholarships and fellowships

Studying or research in Asia and/or the Middle East can be expensive. Fortunately, there are scholarships and fellowships that partially or completely cover the necessary costs. We will highlight the most important and accessible options on this page. Scholarships for language and programme studies, as well as exchange opportunities

The scholarship aims to support students of the University of Tartu whose research focuses on Asian and/or Middle Eastern regions or areas dealing with them. Furthermore, also graduates whose MA thesis includes scientific work that helps develop knowledge and research of Asia and/or the Middle East in Estonian society can apply for the scholarship. This includes building and networking relationships such as joint mentoring and cooperation with Asian research institutions. 

The scholarship of 2000€ is awarded once a year in every in each faculty. 

Applying 

1. Students of the Faculty of Humanities and Arts, Faculty of Social Sciences, and Faculty of Sciences and Techonology

Students of the following faculties can apply for the scholarship with their Master's thesis submitted to the defense in the following school year. For instance, in June 2024, students who submitted their thesis within the school year of 2023/2024 to the defense, are eligible for the scholarship.

To apply for the scholarship with your master's thesis, the following must be submitted to the Asian Centre of the University of Tartu: 

  • curriculum vitae with an overview of professional and social activities. Please add some sentences about your social activity or research is linked with the aim of the scholarship;

  • pdf-file of the Master's thesis submitted for defense;

  • after defense, the grade given by the examination committee;

2. Students of the Faculty of Medicine

Students of the faculty of medicine can apply for the scholarship with their Master's thesis submitted to the defence in the following school year, internship abroad, PhD dissertation or its project and research work in cases of dentistry and pharmacology students.

To apply with your master's thesis, the following must be submitted to the Asian Centre of the University of Tartu: 

  • curriculum vitae with an overview of professional and social activities. Please add some sentences about your social activity or research is linked with the aim of the scholarship;

  • pdf-file of the Master's thesis submitted for defense;

To apply for the scholarship with your PhD plan, full dissertation or internship abroad, please submit:

  • curriculum vitae with an overview of professional and social activities. Please add some sentences about how your social activity or research is linked with the aim of the scholarship;

  • pdf-file of the PhD plan, full dissertation or plan of the internship abroad;

  • signed recommendation letter from the supervisor; 

The deadline for the submission of documents is 25th of May 2024. The files must be submitted to the e-mail address evelyn.pihla@ut.ee. The scholarship is determined based on the academic level of the Master's thesis, and professional and social activities. In the cases of internship abroad, fulfilment of the set goals and the and professional and social activities 

The applications received are evaluated by an interdisciplinary committee, including representatives of the University of Tartu Asia Centre. The scholarship shall be handed over to the scholarship recipient at the graduation of the field of study in the 2023/2024 academic year. 

The MEXT Scholarship is awarded by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology to foreign nationals for them to come to Japan to study. There are multiple reasons for why Japan offers such scholarships but some of the reasons are as follows:

  • To bring the brightest minds of the world to Japan’s educational institutions
  • To internationalize Japan’s educational scene
  • To develop a group of people who can act as bridges between Japan and other countries
  • To promote studying in Japan as a whole

The aim of the scholarship is to provide international students with opportunities to conduct advanced studies in undergraduate and graduate studies at higher education institutions in the Republic of Korea in order to promote international exchange in education and mutual friendship between countries. This fellowship provides professors, graduate students and Korea-related professionals with an opportunity to take an intensive Korean language course up to one year at a university-affiliated language institute in Korea.

  • Eligibility : M.A./Ph.D. students and faculty members in the field of Korean Studies, professionals involved in Korea-related activities
  • Number of Awardees : Up to 40 per year
  • Fellowship Period : 6 – 12 months
  • Program Support : tuition fees, monthly stipend(1 - 1.2 million KRW), travelers’ insurance

The Lee Kong Chian Graduate Scholarships ("Scholarships") were established from donations received from the Lee Foundation and are the University's most prestigious scholarship awards for graduate students.

The selection of candidates will take place twice a year, in time for the start of the academic year in August and January. Up to 5 new Scholarships will be given each year. Not all Scholarships will be awarded unless there are candidates of sufficient merit.

Incoming PhD candidates will have to indicate their interest in the Scholarship when they submit their application for admission.

Apart from the other supporting documents required for PhD admission, candidates interested in the Scholarship must also submit a personal essay and a record of co-curricular activities or community service. Short-listed candidates will be invited to an interview either in Singapore or their home country.

Eligibility

Have graduated with an undergraduate degree with first class or second-upper (or equivalent); Be an incoming new PhD student not currently matriculated; At the time of award of the Scholarship, must have been offered admission as a candidate for a full-time higher degree by research at NUS and; Students must be eligible for MOE Subsidy.

Benefits

A monthly stipend of S$3,500; Tuition and Miscellaneous Student Fees at NUS; An annual book allowance of S$500; A one-off air travel allowance of 2 return tickets of up to S$3,000 (only for overseas students subject to a maximum of S$2,000 per return ticket on economy class and 20 kg baggage per trip); and A one-off laptop allowance of S$1,500.

*All airfare claims must be made within 1 month from date of travel. Please attach original receipt(s) with the relevant completed form and submit it to Registrar's Office.

The Turkish state offers support for studying in Turkey at all levels of study. It is possible to apply:

Fellowships and support for research and developing study programmes

The KF Field Research program is designed to support doctorate-level students and prominent scholars in Korean Studies for their field research in Korea.

  • Eligibility : Doctoral candidate, professors and researchers conducting research on Korea in the field of humanities or social sciences
  • Number of Awardees : Around 30 per year
  • Fellowship Period : 1 - 12 months
  • Program Support : monthly stipend(2 – 3 million KRW), round-trip airfare, traveler’s insurance

The Research Scholarship Program is a program designed to encourage international researchers and academicians to cooperate with Turkish academicians in the most prestigious universities of Türkiye.

PhD holders or PhD candidates at the dissertation stage may also apply to this program. The Research Scholarship Program only covers monthly stipend. The “Academic Exchange Support Program for North Korean and Unification Studies” is designed to expand the pool of experts on peace and unification studies on the Korean Peninsula as well as North Korean studies in the international community. 

The MOU-IFES North Korean Studies Fellowship is designed to provide fellowship support for 6 months to applicants who are interested in Korean Peninsula issues in general, North Korea and unification, in particular. This fellowship provides numerous programs for scholars including opportunities to work with prestigious experts on North Korean issues, attend special lectures by current and former government ministers and policy makers, and participate in academic exchange, expert workshops, and field trips, among other activities and events.

The fellowship is managed by the Institute for Far Eastern Studies of Kyungnam University (IFES) with the sponsorship of Minister of Unification (MOU).
